Your first Korea trip: a few places, a few useful phrases

Choose a manageable first outing and learn the questions you are most likely to use before you arrive.

Choose one area to start

  • Pick one main place and a nearby meal or rest stop. A list of famous attractions is not a realistic daily schedule.
  • Open the location in your map app and check the return journey before leaving your accommodation. Keep the Korean place name available to show someone.
  • Read the venue’s current notice for admission, closures and reservations. Outdoor grounds and indoor facilities may follow different arrangements.

Practise the questions you will actually ask

  • Say the destination name aloud once, then practise asking where the entrance is. You do not need a complete conversation to get started.
  • At a counter, start with 안녕하세요, then ask one short question. Pointing at a map or showing a written name can make the request clearer.
  • If the answer is too fast, ask the person to speak slowly or write it down. Check that you understood before walking away.

Make the learning part of the outing

  • Before you go, save three expressions and listen to each one. Keep the translations available rather than relying on memory.
  • Use one phrase in a situation where it fits naturally. Thank the person and give other customers space.
  • Afterwards, revisit a word you saw on a sign. A real place is easier to remember than an isolated vocabulary list.
