Market Korean: order a little, ask clearly

Use a market visit to learn food names, portions and the small questions that make ordering easier.

Look before joining the queue

  • Choose the food first, then look for the ordering point and the place to collect it. A busy stall may handle takeaway and seated customers differently.
  • Check the displayed price and what it covers. One serving, one piece and a plate for sharing are not always the same thing.
  • Have the item name or a photo ready. Pointing and saying 이거 하나 주세요 is often more useful than trying to translate a whole menu.

Ask before you order

  • Ask about ingredients before payment if you avoid a particular food. Do not assume a dish is vegetarian because the visible ingredients are vegetables.
  • For an allergy, explain the allergen clearly and ask about preparation as well as ingredients. A brief language exercise is not a substitute for a reliable safety check.
  • Ask about spice level separately from allergies. 덜 맵게 해 주세요 is a request; the stall may not be able to adjust a dish prepared in advance.

Keep the transaction simple

  • Start with one item and the quantity. Add 포장해 주세요 if you want it packed to take away.
  • Check whether card payment is available rather than assuming every vendor accepts the same payment methods.
  • Before leaving, check your change or payment amount and make sure you have collected every item. A short 감사합니다 finishes the exchange well.
