Helping a child start school in Seoul

Begin with the school or local education office for your address. Grade placement, documents and language support need a conversation about the child’s own history.

Prepare a simple learning history

  • Note the child’s age, previous schools, grades completed and languages used.
  • Ask which school records and identity or address documents are needed.
  • Check translation or authentication requirements before ordering documents overseas.

Ask about the everyday school experience

  • Confirm the admission process and the appropriate school contact.
  • Ask about Korean-language support, including a Korean class or other local provision.
  • Check meals, transport, supplies and how the school communicates with parents.

Help the child settle gradually

  • Tell the teacher which language the child is most comfortable using.
  • Keep a shared record of notices, dates and questions.
  • If the first school cannot provide a needed service, ask the education office about a referral.

A little Korean goes a long way

  • 전학 절차를 알고 싶어요. — I would like to know the school transfer process.
  • 한국어 지원 수업이 있나요? — Is Korean-language support available?
