Health insurance: check when your cover starts

Do not assume everyone waits the same number of months. Employment, residence status and student category can affect when National Health Insurance applies.

Confirm your route

  • If employed, ask your employer about workplace enrolment and the effective date.
  • If not employed, ask NHIS whether you are an individual subscriber or eligible to apply as a dependent.
  • Students should confirm their own D-2 or D-4 circumstances rather than treating all student visas alike.

Check the paperwork and bills

  • Keep the registered address current so important notices reach you.
  • For foreign-language NHIS enquiries, call 033-811-2000; ask about an unfamiliar bill or change in eligibility.
  • Keep payment records and ask what happens when your employment or status changes.

Before a medical visit

  • Confirm that your eligibility is active; possessing a residence card alone does not explain the cover.
  • Ask the provider about patient payments and services outside insurance.
  • For short stays, check your travel-insurance terms instead of assuming NHIS applies.

A little Korean goes a long way

  • 건강보험 자격을 확인하고 싶어요. — I would like to check my health insurance eligibility.
  • 보험이 적용되나요? — Is this covered by insurance?
