Arrange language help before a medical appointment
A hospital’s international desk and a community interpretation service are different arrangements. Ask what is available for your appointment before the day of the visit.

Ask the hospital first
- Tell the booking desk which language you need and which department you will attend.
- Ask whether language assistance requires a separate appointment or fee.
- Confirm whether the assistance covers the consultation, tests and payment desk.
Prepare a short medical note
- List the main problem, when it began, medicines and allergies.
- Write the questions you most need answered so they are not lost in translation.
- Keep translated notes factual; a translation app cannot decide a diagnosis.
Check community support
- Seoul lists medical interpretation support for eligible foreign residents; confirm the current application and languages.
- Check whether work or study in Seoul meets the programme’s eligibility rules.
- Allow time for booking and ask the provider how personal medical information will be handled.
A little Korean goes a long way
- 진료 통역을 예약할 수 있나요? — Can I book interpretation for the appointment?
- 영어로 설명해 주실 수 있나요? — Could you explain in English?

Your first visit to a Korean clinic
For routine, non-emergency care, a nearby clinic can be a practical starting point. Call first if you need a particular language or are unsure which department to visit.
At the pharmacy: explain, check, then take it home
Bring the prescription if a clinician has given you one. At the counter, explain your situation rather than choosing medicine by package colour or a familiar-looking name.
Save these details before you need urgent help
In an emergency, your location is often the first useful piece of information. Keep your accommodation address in Korean where you can find it without searching.
Health insurance: check when your cover starts
Do not assume everyone waits the same number of months. Employment, residence status and student category can affect when National Health Insurance applies.
