Marriage paperwork: ask about both countries

A marriage report and a residence application are separate processes. Nationality and where the marriage takes place affect the documents, so get a checklist for your own case.

Check the reporting route

  • Contact the relevant Korean district office and your embassy or consulate before gathering documents.
  • Ask which proof of identity, marital status and capacity to marry is required.
  • Check whether the marriage also needs reporting or recognition in the other country.

Confirm document details

  • Ask about translations, authentication and document validity periods.
  • Keep names and dates consistent across passports and certificates.
  • Check whether originals will be retained and how to obtain extra official copies.

Deal with residence separately

  • If a residence-status change is needed, check the current immigration requirements.
  • Do not assume reporting a marriage automatically grants a visa, permanent residence or nationality.
  • Keep the marriage record available for later applications without sharing it unnecessarily.

A little Korean goes a long way

  • 혼인신고에 필요한 서류가 무엇인가요? — What documents are needed to report a marriage?
  • 번역 공증이 필요한가요? — Is a notarised translation required?
