은/는
은/는
Marcador de Tópico
Use 은 após consoante, 는 após vogal
은/는 marks the TOPIC of the sentence — what the sentence is 'about'. It introduces, contrasts, or shifts focus. Different from the subject marker 이/가.
-
받침 O
N + 은
학생 → 학생은 · 한국 → 한국은
-
받침 X
N + 는
저 → 저는 · 의사 → 의사는
-
대조
A는 … B는 …
저는 커피를 좋아해요. 존은 차를 좋아해요.
-
저는 학생이에요
Jeoneun haksaengieyo
Eu (tópico) sou estudante
-
아람은 한국 사람이에요. 히토미는 일본 사람이에요.
Arameun hanguk saram-ieyo. Hitomineun ilbon saram-ieyo.
Aram é coreana. Hitomi é japonesa. (contraste)
❌ 저이가 학생이에요 → ✅ 저는 학생이에요 (introducing yourself = topic 은/는, not subject 이/가)
은/는 = 'Speaking of N…'. It CONTRASTS topics: 저는 좋아요, 히토미는 싫어해요 (I like it; Hitomi doesn't).
💡 Book p.33 Ch.01. 이/가 = new info. 은/는 = known/topic. 고양이가 있어요 (there IS a cat) → 고양이는 귀여워요 (the cat IS cute).
이/가
이/가
Marcador de Sujeito
Use 이 após consoante, 가 após vogal
이/가 marks the grammatical SUBJECT — who or what performs the action or is being described. Often introduces NEW information.
-
히토미가 국수를 먹어요
Hitomi-ga guksureul meogeoyo
Hitomi (sujeito) come macarrão
-
존이 제일 빨라요
Jon-i jeil ppallayo
John é o mais rápido (이/가 destaca)
❌ 저가 학생이에요 → ✅ 제가 학생이에요 (저 contracts to 제 with 가; 나 → 내가)
이/가 highlights or singles out: 누가 했어요? — 존이 했어요 (WHO did it? — JOHN did). 은/는 would shift the topic instead.
💡 Book p.52 Ch.03. 뭐가 맛있어요? = What's delicious? · 어디가 아파요? = Where does it hurt? (이/가 with question words)
을/를
을/를
Marcador de Objeto
Use 을 após consoante, 를 após vogal
을/를 marks the DIRECT OBJECT — what the action is done to. Korean requires an explicit object marker; it can't be omitted in formal speech.
❌ 저는 한국어를 좋아이에요 → ✅ 한국어를 좋아해요 (좋아하다 takes 을/를 object)
Some verbs that seem intransitive in English take 을/를 in Korean: 운동을 하다 (do exercise), 음악을 듣다 (listen to music).
💡 Book p.68 Ch.05. In casual spoken Korean, 을/를 is often dropped. In writing and formal speech, always include it.

-
카이랑 존이랑 같이 먹었어요
Kai-rang Jon-i-rang gachi meogeosseoyo
Comi junto com Kai e John (informal)
❌ 사과이랑 → ✅ 사과랑 (사과 ends in vowel → 랑, not 이랑) / ❌ 친구와 놀아요 (too formal in speech) → ✅ 친구하고/랑 놀아요
Use 하고 as your default in class. Use (이)랑 with friends. Save 와/과 for essays and formal writing.
💡 Book p.99 Ch.10. 같이 (together) often follows: 친구하고 같이 가요 = go together with a friend.

Hitomi-man siheom-e hapgyeokaesseoyo
SÓ Hitomi passou no exame
❌ 저는도 좋아요 → ✅ 저도 좋아요 (도 REPLACES 은/는 and 이/가 — don't stack them)
도 replaces 은/는, 이/가, 을/를 entirely. But it ADDS to 에/에서: 학교에도 가요 (go to school too).
💡 Book p.137 Ch.15. 아무것도 없어요 (nothing at all) · 아무도 안 왔어요 (nobody came) — 도 + negative for total negation.
밖에
밖에
Só (com verbo negativo)
N밖에 + negativo = 'apenas N' — SEMPRE requer verbo negativo
밖에 literally means 'outside of'. Combined with negation, it means 'nothing but N' or 'only N'. It emphasizes scarcity or limitation.
-
저는 한국어밖에 몰라요
Jeoneun hangugeo-bakk-e mollayo
Só sei coreano (implica 'infelizmente')
-
돈이 천 원밖에 없어요
Don-i cheon won-bakk-e eopseoyo
Só tenho 1.000 won
❌ 물밖에 마셔요 → ✅ 물밖에 안 마셔요 (밖에 MUST be followed by a negative verb — always)
밖에 sounds like a complaint or limitation. 만 sounds neutral. Use 밖에 when you want to express 'sadly/unfortunately only'.
💡 Book p.100 Ch.10. Compare: 커피만 마셔요 (I only drink coffee — by choice) vs 커피밖에 없어요 (there's only coffee — forced).
(으)로
(으)로
Direção · Por/Via · Meio

Vá para a direita (direção)
❌ 지하철로 가세요 (로 after ㄹ — correct!) vs ❌ 오른쪽로 → ✅ 오른쪽으로 (받침 ㄱ → 으로)
ㄹ받침 takes 로 (NOT 으로): 지하철로, 서울로, 볼펜으로(X)→볼펜으로(O). ㄹ is treated like a vowel-ending.
💡 Book p.101 Ch.10. 어떻게 가요? = How do you get there? → 지하철로 가요. (으)로 answers 'how/by what means'.

❌ 장소에게 가요 → ✅ 장소에 가요 (에게/한테 is for PEOPLE only; use 에 for places)
에게/한테 answers '누구에게? (to whom?)'. For animals you can use 에게/한테 too: 강아지한테 밥을 줬어요.
💡 Book p.144–146 Ch.16. 께 = extra-polite 에게 (for elders/teachers): 선생님께 드렸어요 (I gave it to the teacher).
처럼 / 같이
처럼 / 같이
Como / Semelhante a
처럼 = como N (modo/semelhança) · 같이 = como/juntos (duplo significado)
처럼 and 같이 both mean 'like/as'. 처럼 focuses on resemblance in manner; 같이 also means 'together' (context-dependent).
-
처럼 (like)
N + 처럼 + V/A
히토미처럼 잘 해요 (does well like Hitomi)
-
같이 (like)
N + 같이 + V/A
천사같이 착해요 (kind like an angel)
-
같이 (together)
person + 같이 + V
같이 가요? (Shall we go together?)

-
아람이는 선생님같이 설명해요
Aram-ineun seonsaengnim-gachi seolmyeonghaeyo
Aram explica como uma professora
❌ 아이처럼 귀엽다 (처럼 is fine here) but don't confuse 같이 (like) with 같아요 (seems/looks like): 꿈같아요 = It's like a dream.
처럼 = 'in the manner of' (always simile). 같이 = 'like' OR 'together'. Check context: 친구같이 vs 친구와 같이.
💡 Book p.150 Ch.17. N 같아요 = 'It looks like N / It seems like N': 비가 올 것 같아요 (seems like rain).
보다 / 만큼
보다 / 만큼

Rohan-i Jon-boda kiga deo keoyo
Rohan é mais alto que John
-
카이만큼 빠른 사람이 없어요
Kai-mankeum ppareun saram-i eopseoyo
Ninguém é tão rápido quanto Kai
❌ 더 보다 키가 커요 → ✅ 보다 키가 더 커요 (더 comes AFTER 보다, not before it)
더 (more) is optional but natural with 보다: 저보다 더 잘해요. 덜 (less) also works: 저보다 덜 비싸요 (less expensive than me).
💡 Book p.151–154 Ch.17. 아무리 + A/V + 아/어도: 아무리 비싸도 살 거예요 = No matter how expensive, I'll buy it.
의
의
Marcador Possessivo
N의 N = 'N de N'. 의 pronunciado /에/ na fala casual
의 marks possession or association. In casual spoken Korean it's pronounced '에' and is often dropped entirely.

Uri hakgyo-ui doseogwan-i keoyo
A biblioteca da nossa escola é grande
❌ 저의 이름은 → ✅ 제 이름은 (저의 contracts to 제; 나의→내; 너의→네 in natural speech)
우리 (our/my) is used instead of 나의 for personal items: 우리 집 (my home), 우리 엄마 (my mom). Korean uses 우리 where English says 'my'.
💡 Book p.89 Ch.08. 의 is the only particle that has a pronunciation change: written 의 but spoken 에 in possessive context.
마다
마다
Cada / Todo
N마다: todo N, cada N (habitual, distributivo ou universal)
마다 attaches to nouns to mean 'every' or 'each'. Used for habits, schedules, and universal statements.

❌ 매일마다 → ✅ 매일 OR 날마다 (매일 already means 'every day' — don't double up with 마다)
마다 emphasizes EACH instance individually. 아침마다 = each and every morning (one by one), not just 'mornings in general'.
💡 Book p.189 Ch.22. 어딜 가나 / 어디서나 = everywhere. 언제나/항상 = always. These give a similar 'universal' feeling.
