은/는

은/는

Trợ từ chủ đề

Dùng 은 sau phụ âm, 는 sau nguyên âm

은/는 marks the TOPIC of the sentence — what the sentence is 'about'. It introduces, contrasts, or shifts focus. Different from the subject marker 이/가.

  • 받침 O

    N + 은

    학생 → 학생은 · 한국 → 한국은

  • 받침 X

    N + 는

    저 → 저는 · 의사 → 의사는

  • 대조

    A는 … B는 …

저는 커피를 좋아해요. 존은 차를 좋아해요.

  • 저는 학생이에요

    Jeoneun haksaengieyo

Tôi (chủ đề) là học sinh

  • 아람은 한국 사람이에요. 히토미는 일본 사람이에요.

Arameun hanguk saram-ieyo. Hitomineun ilbon saram-ieyo.

Aram là người Hàn. Hitomi là người Nhật. (tương phản)

❌ 저이가 학생이에요 → ✅ 저는 학생이에요 (introducing yourself = topic 은/는, not subject 이/가)

은/는 = 'Speaking of N…'. It CONTRASTS topics: 저는 좋아요, 히토미는 싫어해요 (I like it; Hitomi doesn't).

💡 Book p.33 Ch.01. 이/가 = new info. 은/는 = known/topic. 고양이가 있어요 (there IS a cat) → 고양이는 귀여워요 (the cat IS cute).

이/가

이/가

Trợ từ chủ ngữ

Dùng 이 sau phụ âm, 가 sau nguyên âm

이/가 marks the grammatical SUBJECT — who or what performs the action or is being described. Often introduces NEW information.

  • 받침 O

    N + 이

    존 → 존이 · 학생 → 학생이

  • 받침 X

    N + 가

    히토미 → 히토미가 · 저 → 제가

  • 특수형

    저 → 제가 · 나 → 내가

제가 했어요 (formal: I did it)

  • 히토미가 국수를 먹어요

    Hitomi-ga guksureul meogeoyo

    Hitomi (chủ ngữ) ăn mì

  • 존이 제일 빨라요

    Jon-i jeil ppallayo

John nhanh nhất (이/가 nhấn mạnh)

❌ 저가 학생이에요 → ✅ 제가 학생이에요 (저 contracts to 제 with 가; 나 → 내가)

이/가 highlights or singles out: 누가 했어요? — 존이 했어요 (WHO did it? — JOHN did). 은/는 would shift the topic instead.

💡 Book p.52 Ch.03. 뭐가 맛있어요? = What's delicious? · 어디가 아파요? = Where does it hurt? (이/가 with question words)

을/를

을/를

Trợ từ tân ngữ

Dùng 을 sau phụ âm, 를 sau nguyên âm

을/를 marks the DIRECT OBJECT — what the action is done to. Korean requires an explicit object marker; it can't be omitted in formal speech.

  • 받침 O

    N + 을

    책 → 책을 · 밥 → 밥을

  • 받침 X

    N + 를

    치마 → 치마를 · 커피 → 커피를

  • 구어체 생략

    을/를 often dropped in speech

    커피 마셔요 (casual)

  • 히토미는 치마를 샀어요

    Hitomi-neun chimareul sasseoyo

Hitomi đã mua một cái váy

  • 카이가 생선을 구워요

    Kai-ga saengseoneul guweoyo

    Kai đang nướng cá

❌ 저는 한국어를 좋아이에요 → ✅ 한국어를 좋아해요 (좋아하다 takes 을/를 object)

Some verbs that seem intransitive in English take 을/를 in Korean: 운동을 하다 (do exercise), 음악을 듣다 (listen to music).

💡 Book p.68 Ch.05. In casual spoken Korean, 을/를 is often dropped. In writing and formal speech, always include it.

Tôi đi học lúc 7 giờ (② thời gian + ③ hướng)

❌ 학교에 공부해요 → ✅ 학교에서 공부해요 (action location = 에서, not 에)

에 = STATIC point (where sth IS, when, toward where). 에서 = DYNAMIC point (where action HAPPENS, from where).

💡 Book p.41–42 Ch.02. 오늘/어제/내일 do NOT take 에: ×오늘에 가요 → ✅ 오늘 가요.

에서

에서

에서 marks the location WHERE an action happens (different from 에 which marks where something EXISTS), and also 'from' a place.

    도서관에서 공부해요

  • ② 출발지 (from)

    장소 + 에서

  • 아람이는 한국에서 왔어요

    Aram đến từ Hàn Quốc

❌ 집에 살아요 → ✅ 집에서 살아요 (living = action → 에서) / ❌ 도서관에서 책이 있어요 → ✅ 도서관에 책이 있어요 (existence → 에)

Quick rule: 있다/없다/계시다 = 에. All other verbs describing actions = 에서.

💡 Book p.95–96 Ch.09. 어디에서 오셨어요? = Where are you from? (Standard polite greeting in Korea)

와/과 · 하고 · (이)랑

와/과 · 하고 · (이)랑

  • 와/과 (formal)

    받침X → 와 · 받침O → 과

    의사와 간호사 · 빵과 우유

  • 하고 (neutral)

    N + 하고 (no change)

    빵하고 우유 · 아람이하고

  • (이)랑 (casual)

    받침X → 랑 · 받침O → 이랑

    카이랑 · 존이랑

  • 아람이는 히토미하고 쇼핑했어요

    Aram-ineun Hitomi-hago syopinghaesseoyo

Aram đi mua sắm cùng Hitomi

  • 카이랑 존이랑 같이 먹었어요

    Kai-rang Jon-i-rang gachi meogeosseoyo

Tôi ăn cùng Kai và John (thông thường)

❌ 사과이랑 → ✅ 사과랑 (사과 ends in vowel → 랑, not 이랑) / ❌ 친구와 놀아요 (too formal in speech) → ✅ 친구하고/랑 놀아요

Use 하고 as your default in class. Use (이)랑 with friends. Save 와/과 for essays and formal writing.

💡 Book p.99 Ch.10. 같이 (together) often follows: 친구하고 같이 가요 = go together with a friend.

도 / 만

도 / 만

Cũng / Chỉ

도 thay thế 이/가·은/는·을/를 · 만 thay thế hoặc thêm vào trợ từ khác

도 (also/too) adds a new element to what was just said. 만 (only/just) restricts to a single element, excluding others.

  • 도 (addition)

    N + 도 (replaces 은/는, 이/가, 을/를)

    저도 · 밥도 · 학교도

  • 만 (restriction)

    N + 만

    물만 마셔요 · 히토미만 왔어요

  • 도 + negative

    N도 + 안/못 V

저도 몰라요 (I don't know either)

  • 카이도 한국어를 공부해요

    Kai-do hangugeo-reul gongbuhaeyo

    Kai CŨNG học tiếng Hàn

  • 히토미만 시험에 합격했어요

    Hitomi-man siheom-e hapgyeokaesseoyo

CHỈ Hitomi đã vượt qua kỳ thi

❌ 저는도 좋아요 → ✅ 저도 좋아요 (도 REPLACES 은/는 and 이/가 — don't stack them)

도 replaces 은/는, 이/가, 을/를 entirely. But it ADDS to 에/에서: 학교에도 가요 (go to school too).

💡 Book p.137 Ch.15. 아무것도 없어요 (nothing at all) · 아무도 안 왔어요 (nobody came) — 도 + negative for total negation.

밖에

밖에

Chỉ (với động từ phủ định)

N밖에 + phủ định = 'chỉ N' — LUÔN cần động từ phủ định

밖에 literally means 'outside of'. Combined with negation, it means 'nothing but N' or 'only N'. It emphasizes scarcity or limitation.

  • 구조

    N + 밖에 + negative (안/못/없다)

    물밖에 없어요 · 조금밖에 없어요

  • 만 vs 밖에

    만: neutral 'only' · 밖에: 'only/just' (regret/scarcity)

    10명만 왔어요 vs 10명밖에 안 왔어요

  • 저는 한국어밖에 몰라요

    Jeoneun hangugeo-bakk-e mollayo

Tôi chỉ biết tiếng Hàn (ngụ ý 'tiếc là')

  • 돈이 천 원밖에 없어요

    Don-i cheon won-bakk-e eopseoyo

    Tôi chỉ có 1.000 won

❌ 물밖에 마셔요 → ✅ 물밖에 안 마셔요 (밖에 MUST be followed by a negative verb — always)

밖에 sounds like a complaint or limitation. 만 sounds neutral. Use 밖에 when you want to express 'sadly/unfortunately only'.

💡 Book p.100 Ch.10. Compare: 커피만 마셔요 (I only drink coffee — by choice) vs 커피밖에 없어요 (there's only coffee — forced).

  • 받침O (ㄹ 제외)

    N + 으로

    연필로(X)→연필로 · 오른쪽으로

    Đi về bên phải (hướng)

❌ 지하철로 가세요 (로 after ㄹ — correct!) vs ❌ 오른쪽로 → ✅ 오른쪽으로 (받침 ㄱ → 으로)

ㄹ받침 takes 로 (NOT 으로): 지하철로, 서울로, 볼펜으로(X)→볼펜으로(O). ㄹ is treated like a vowel-ending.

💡 Book p.101 Ch.10. 어떻게 가요? = How do you get there? → 지하철로 가요. (으)로 answers 'how/by what means'.

에게/한테 answers '누구에게? (to whom?)'. For animals you can use 에게/한테 too: 강아지한테 밥을 줬어요.

💡 Book p.144–146 Ch.16. 께 = extra-polite 에게 (for elders/teachers): 선생님께 드렸어요 (I gave it to the teacher).

처럼 / 같이

처럼 / 같이

Như / Giống như

처럼 = giống N (cách thức/giống) · 같이 = giống/cùng nhau (hai nghĩa)

처럼 and 같이 both mean 'like/as'. 처럼 focuses on resemblance in manner; 같이 also means 'together' (context-dependent).

  • 처럼 (like)

    N + 처럼 + V/A

히토미처럼 잘 해요 (does well like Hitomi)

  • 같이 (like)

    N + 같이 + V/A

천사같이 착해요 (kind like an angel)

  • 같이 (together)

    person + 같이 + V

같이 가요? (Shall we go together?)

  • 카이는 원어민처럼 한국어를 해요

    Kai-neun woneomin-cheoreom hangugeo-reul haeyo

Kai nói tiếng Hàn như người bản xứ

  • 아람이는 선생님같이 설명해요

    Aram-ineun seonsaengnim-gachi seolmyeonghaeyo

Aram giải thích như giáo viên

❌ 아이처럼 귀엽다 (처럼 is fine here) but don't confuse 같이 (like) with 같아요 (seems/looks like): 꿈같아요 = It's like a dream.

처럼 = 'in the manner of' (always simile). 같이 = 'like' OR 'together'. Check context: 친구같이 vs 친구와 같이.

💡 Book p.150 Ch.17. N 같아요 = 'It looks like N / It seems like N': 비가 올 것 같아요 (seems like rain).

보다 / 만큼

보다 / 만큼

Hơn / Nhiều như

N보다: hơn N (so sánh) · N만큼: nhiều bằng N (bằng nhau)

보다 marks the standard of comparison ('than'). 만큼 marks equivalence ('as much as'). Used with adjectives for degree comparison.

  • 보다 (than)

    A가 B보다 + A/V

    로한이 존보다 키가 커요

  • 만큼 (as much as)

    A가 B만큼 + A/V

    히토미만큼 잘해요

  • 가장/제일 (most)

    가장/제일 + A/V

존이 제일 빨라요 (John is the fastest)

  • 로한이 존보다 키가 더 커요

    Rohan-i Jon-boda kiga deo keoyo

    Rohan cao hơn John

  • 카이만큼 빠른 사람이 없어요

    Kai-mankeum ppareun saram-i eopseoyo

    Không ai nhanh bằng Kai

❌ 더 보다 키가 커요 → ✅ 보다 키가 더 커요 (더 comes AFTER 보다, not before it)

더 (more) is optional but natural with 보다: 저보다 더 잘해요. 덜 (less) also works: 저보다 덜 비싸요 (less expensive than me).

💡 Book p.151–154 Ch.17. 아무리 + A/V + 아/어도: 아무리 비싸도 살 거예요 = No matter how expensive, I'll buy it.

의

의

Trợ từ sở hữu

N의 N = 'N của N'. 의 phát âm là /에/ trong nói thông thường

의 marks possession or association. In casual spoken Korean it's pronounced '에' and is often dropped entirely.

  • 소유

    owner + 의 + thing

    히토미의 가방 (Hitomi's bag)

  • 단축형

    저의 → 제 · 나의 → 내 · 너의 → 네

    제 가방 · 내 친구

  • 구어체 생략

    의 often dropped in speech

    친구 집 (= 친구의 집)

  • 이게 히토미의 가방이에요? 아니요, 제 가방이에요

    Ige Hitomi-ui gabang-ieyo? Aniyo, je gabang-ieyo

Đây có phải túi của Hitomi không? Không, đó là túi của tôi.

  • 우리 학교의 도서관이 커요

    Uri hakgyo-ui doseogwan-i keoyo

Thư viện trường chúng tôi lớn

❌ 저의 이름은 → ✅ 제 이름은 (저의 contracts to 제; 나의→내; 너의→네 in natural speech)

우리 (our/my) is used instead of 나의 for personal items: 우리 집 (my home), 우리 엄마 (my mom). Korean uses 우리 where English says 'my'.

💡 Book p.89 Ch.08. 의 is the only particle that has a pronunciation change: written 의 but spoken 에 in possessive context.

마다

마다

Mỗi / Từng

N마다: mỗi N, từng N (thói quen, phân phối hoặc phổ quát)

마다 attaches to nouns to mean 'every' or 'each'. Used for habits, schedules, and universal statements.

  • 습관/일정

    time N + 마다

    매일마다(X)→매일 / 토요일마다 · 아침마다

  • 개별/각각

    N + 마다

    사람마다 달라요 · 나라마다 달라요

  • 매- vs 마다

    매- (prefix) = 마다 (suffix)

    매주 = 주마다 · 매년 = 해마다

  • 아람이는 아침마다 커피를 마셔요

    Aram-ineun achim-mada keopi-reul masyeoyo

Aram uống cà phê mỗi sáng

  • 사람마다 생각이 달라요

    Saram-mada saenggag-i dallayo

    Mỗi người nghĩ khác nhau

❌ 매일마다 → ✅ 매일 OR 날마다 (매일 already means 'every day' — don't double up with 마다)

마다 emphasizes EACH instance individually. 아침마다 = each and every morning (one by one), not just 'mornings in general'.

💡 Book p.189 Ch.22. 어딜 가나 / 어디서나 = everywhere. 언제나/항상 = always. These give a similar 'universal' feeling.
