Rubbish and recycling: ask about your building

The right bag is only half the answer. The collection place, day and method can differ by district and building.

Learn the local setup

  • Ask the manager or district which bags and collection points apply to your address.
  • Keep ordinary waste, food waste and recycling separate as instructed locally.
  • Check the collection day and time before leaving anything outside.

When sorting is unclear

  • Follow the local guide for individual items rather than guessing from the material alone.
  • Ask what to do with packaging that contains more than one material.
  • Keep collection areas clear and do not leave loose waste beside full containers.

For furniture and larger items

  • Check the district’s bulky-waste reporting and collection procedure before putting the item out.
  • Confirm the charge and any label or reference you must attach.
  • For appliances, ask about the appropriate collection route instead of assuming all large items use the same service.

A little Korean goes a long way

  • 이건 어떻게 분리배출하나요? — How should I sort this for disposal?
  • 배출 요일이 언제인가요? — Which day is collection day?
